When talking about Chinese food in Sacramento most people immediately think of Frank Fatís. Fat's is a local institution, achieving its legendary status during the days of former Assembly Speakers Jesse Unruh and Willie Brown. Fatís actually pre-dates both of them. I have eaten at Fatís many times and the food and ambiance both are nice.
However, a more recent and excellent choice for really good Chinese food is New Canton on Broadway. New Canton falls under the heading ďlooks can be deceiving.Ē The restaurant sits in a non-descript section of Broadway, occupying an equally nondescript two story building across from a large government building and next door to a porn shop. Donít worry, the area is not seedy or dangerous, just a bit worn and dated.
The inside of the restaurant doesnít give an accurate impression of the food to come. The restaurant consists of two large rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Iím not sure why, but I think I have a bias against big restaurants. I generally find the larger the restaurant the poorer the quality of the food. However, New Canton doesnít fit that mold.
The food at New Canton is very good, and the prices are very reasonable. The menu is extensive, offering something for everyone from the casual eater to aficionados of some of the more nuanced Chinese offerings. The dishes are traditional, not modern/inventive, and they are executed very well. In addition to the regular items on the menu, New Canton specializes in dim sum. While I am not a huge fan of dim sum, those who are swear by the New Canton dim sum lunches. If you are in Sacramento and looking for a good Chinese meal at a very reasonable price I donít think you can beat New Canton.
