Do fast food chain recommendations belong on www.atlarrys.com? The answer is “definitely yes” when it comes to a Tommy’s double cheese chiliburger and fries. The chiliburger hits the spot and is available 24 hours a day. The double cheese is made with fresh ingredients and comes with two good size patties, lots of thick gooey chili, a fat slice of fresh beef steak tomato, onions, pickle, and mustard. The French fries are thick steak cut and piping hot. Both are quite tasty, especially late at night. As for prices, you cannot beat them -- one of the true bargains in Los Angeles, especially considering the large size of everything.
This is a true Los Angeles classic. Tommy’s was founded more than 50 years ago by Tom Koulax. There are now more than 30 Tommy’s. The original Tommy’s stand at Beverly Blvd. and Rampart Blvd. is still around and is definitely a place to experience, both for the food and the history. Amazingly, there is always a line no matter what time of day. Plenty of parking is available. No seating at the original stand, but plenty of standing counter space.
While this may not be high end food, I would definitely miss Tommy’s chiliburgers if I were stranded on a desert island. I also note that while today there a number of Tommy’s around the Los Angeles area, for some reason it always seems to me that the chili is still best at the original stand and at its early satellite location in North Hills, across from the brewery (with the smell of hops in the air). Others may have their own favorite satellite location.
