For those of us who cannot travel to Havana for authentic Cuban food, there is a great alternative. All you need to do is travel to the Pico Union neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles to enjoy excellent Cuban Cuisine. Although this 50-year-old establishment is located in a strip mall, it will meet all your expectations of wonderful Cuban food. My wife has been going here for 38 years and some of the same table servers still are there.
The menu features typical and tasty Cuban food from the traditional jeres chicken to platanos maduros and yucca. Platanos maduros are fried ripened and sweet bananas. They also serve platanos verdes, green unripened fried salty bananas.
The best and most requested dish is the Milanesa, breaded steak. The green salsa on the table is a real treat to be added to almost all dishes. A unique dish is the Cuban fried rice, with fresh pork, shrimp, chicken, egg and green onions. Hmmm good. And for those daring foodies, there is serve a mean tender beef tongue dish served in a tomato sauce. All dishes are served with black beans and white rice. You can request moro and cristianos – Moors and Christians – rice and beans cooked together in a pork sauce, a real treat.
The have a banquet room for 40 and a wonderful Latin music juke box. Beer and good Spanish and South American wines are available along with delicious Sangria.
