The Big Kitchen is a little in gem in the neighborhood of South Park in San Diego. This small café is a treat for true foodies. The atmosphere is a throw back to the 60’s and Berkeley CA.
The owner/operator is “Judy the Beauty”. She is an amazing civic leader and charming host. The walls display her politics, so be prepared for a walk in the past of art, music and politics. There are posters from the Beatles to Obama covering all available wall space. Woopie Goldberg worked here as a young student continues to pass through on her visits to the area.
The food is traditional Americana, authentic and fresh. They have a wide range of breakfasts and lunches. The menu is filed with many exciting dishes but try their ham and turkey breasts. They are baked fresh. For breakfast I enjoy the huge and delicious pancakes. The varieties of omelets are extraordinary. Vegetarians delight. There usually is a wait at peak morning hours on weekends, made easier with a cup of the hot coffee the serve free while you wait.
It’s a cool and inviting neighborhood hangout that will add to the experience for the visitors to San Diego. Parking is tricky but you will enjoy walking through the charming area.
