The number of good sushi bars in Los Angeles is mindblowing. Kushiyu is one of the many high quality sushi bars and is located in the San Fernando Valley on Ventura Blvd. in a strip mall. This is a place frequented mainly by locals. It has doubled in size over the 10 years I have been eating there. It typically is packed, but takes a small number of reservations. It now features a large “U” shaped sushi bar and a good number of tables. It has been one of my favorites for a long time due to its great sushi, changing unusual items and its kushiyaki grill from Japan.
The kushiyaki grill is behind the sushi bar and you can watch its chefs grill skewers while you watch the sushi chefs at work. Like sushi, your order of kushiyaki comes in two, but skewers instead of on rice. Great kushiyaki includes sea bass and swordfish, various mushrooms and eggplant. One of my personal favorites is Japanese chili peppers, which are flavorful but not spicy and come in a special soy sauce. Like the sushi, they melt in your mouth.
Sushi is always ultra fresh. The spicy tuna on rice cakes is one of the best as is live uni. One of my off-menu favorites is the spider roll, which is a soft shell crab rolled with grilled Japanese chili peppers.
