I was in the mood for fun and Korean BBQ seemed to fit the bill, so I decided to meet a couple of friends at the Yellow Cow in Gardena. I spent quite a bit of time on the web searching for the right place because I really wanted to have a good experience…and I wasn’t disappointed.

Set in a non-descript strip mall, I approached with some hesitation. However once I opened the door my nose filled with the unmistakable scent of meats grilling and a big smile spread across my face. Thank goodness I made a reservation, because this place was packed and loud. I mean it was rocking! Among the dozens of tables, each sporting a grill and an overhead vent to efficiently remove the smoke of grilling meats, I spotted one vacancy; the table I had reserved. We were warmly welcomed and led to our seats. They say that if you’re one of the few “round eyes” in the place, you picked the right spot. Based on that, I’d say we were definitely off to a good start.

We ordered some beers and sake and then glanced around at what our neighbors were eating. This was a food fest gone wild. We took one look at the menu, gave them back to our waiter and told him to just bring it on. We were hungry, willing and able.

What happened next was a nonstop assault of plates and food: Large ones piled with razor thin slices of rib eye, brisket, tongue, and chicken. And small ones: each with a different side dish or dipping sauce including kimchi (fermented cabbage), salad, steamed rice, tiny salty fish, steamed eggs and on and on.

We ate and we drank. Then we ate some more. Just when we thought we saw the light at the end of the tunnel, they brought more food. It was crazy and it was delicious. But sooner or later this food orgy had to end and the plates were declared the winner. We could eat no more.

When the bill came I was pleasantly surprised. Considering I had consumed enough to sustain a small village outside of Seoul for a week, my half of the bill was only about $60 per couple before tip. Such a deal! And a totally enjoyable evening with friends to boot.

Yellow Cow is a fun, fun place with quality food and a very friendly staff. Anytime you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary, give this place a try. I recommend it highly.
