The Zankou Chicken chain began years ago in an Armenian neighborhood of Hollywood. That location has since closed. There are now eight locations in Southern California, all still family owned. We’ve tried this location and the one on Sepulveda Blvd. in Van Nuys.
Zankou specializes in rotisserie chicken served with an amazing garlic paste and red-pickled turnips as garnish. The menu includes shwarma and falafel, but chicken is still the heart and soul of this place. A whole chicken comes with a full bag of pita bread. And don’t forget to request extra garlic spread. The baba ganooush is smoky and delicious. There are formica tables and booths at both locations but more than half the clientele picks up to go orders.
Other locations are in Anaheim, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena.
