Let’s talk breakfast.
If you’re going to Tahoe some morning, you owe it to yourself to take a three-minute detour at Auburn and try Katrina’s Café -- a homey little place on a frontage road a mile or so off Highway 80.
Big flavors. Big variety. Big portions. Great cooking. Friendly, efficient service.
As you walk in, you’ll see an extensive specials board. There’s my kind of meal: house-made corned beef hash and eggs. There is also plenty for the goat cheese and sun-dried tomato eaters including veggie scrambles.
Other specials on our last visit included strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, oatmeal or pumpkin pancakes, chicken fried steak, chicken chipotle omelet and Tuscan scramble – made with the aforementioned goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes plus pesto, eggs and grilled rosemary potato bread.
Truth is, I should be disciplined enough to order some of the dishes that always look so good on other people’s tables. But I am weak. I never get past the corned beef hash or the lemon yogurt pancakes.
A word in my defense.
The hash is big chunks of corned beef and the perfect blend of onion, potato and spices under eggs over easy. It’s what corned beef hash should be but usually isn’t.
And the lemon yogurt pancakes. Moist, tangy and sweet, rolled up with a little powdered sugar. As comforting as your mother’s arms.
Katrina’s opens at 7:00 Wednesday through Sunday. Breakfast runs till noon except Sunday when it goes till 1:30 closing time. They close at 2:30 the other days.
There can be a wait at peak hours. But your patience will be rewarded. Our waitress figured Katrina’s has been there 23 years. With breakfasts like that, it’s likely to be around a lot longer.
